2024 Ampelus Double Puncheon Chardonnay
Ampelus.
Ampelus; (Latin) a personification of the grapevine and lover of the god of wine, Dionysus. These wines extend this personification back to the bottle, reflecting traditional techniques and the vineyard in which they are grown.
Vintage.
A very early start to the Hunter vintage in 2024, influenced indeed by an early Easter. Early frosts were countered by well-timed rain and a warm festive season promoted a great vintage in the Hunter. Crop levels were down but we have great flavour concentration across the board from all of our vineyards. Most exciting is our Ampelus Chardonnay, so good is the quality that we have selected two barrels worth this year, rather than the one of last.
Vineyard.
Our Single Vineyard Chardonnay block is grown on well-drained sandy loam soils located in the heart of Hunter Valley wine country, NSW. It is a south facing slope. The crop yields are relatively low, producing excellent concentration of fruit flavour.
Winemaking.
Hand harvested and lightly pressed straight into 100% new French oak. Wild fermentation was encouraged, and the wine was left on full solids for 6 months where in underwent intense batonage. Only the best two barrels were selected for this wine out of the Briar Hill block.
Tasting Notes.
Struck match on white peach with lime custard and textural minerality. This wine will drink well now and into 4-5 years in a well cellared environment.
